The online Oxford dictionary defines “spirituality” as the “quality of being concerned with the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things.” Most other dictionaries still have the old idea that Spirituality is adhering to a religion, but the new understanding of spirituality rejects religion as necessary. This is because today there are large numbers of people who are quite spiritual i.e, have high ethics, empathy, and wonderment, but reject the need for organized religion.
Today it is clear that this is not true for some conservative or right wing religious groups. Their religion seems to be more political, then spiritual, which just promotes their negative selfish values. Thus there are people who are members of a religious group but appear to be low spirituality

Spirituality then is a feeling of reverence for life, caring for others, and caring for nature. Having a sense of awe at the complexity of life in this reality, thus by this definition even materialists or people who don’t accept Spirituality as important could be spiritual.
